Elina Svitolina and Maria Sakkari meet in the quarterfinals of the 2019 tennis Silicon Valley Classic.
Elina Svitolina is coming off a straight sets win over Daria Kasatkina that took 16 games to decide. In the victory, Svitolina won 87 percent of her first serve points and 46 percent of her second serve points. Svitolina won 65 percent of her total service points and converted on five of her seven break points. Svitolina got 47 percent of her first serves in play and saved four of her five break points. Svitolina has to be sharper with her serve, but her return has been on point as of late and six of her seven completed victories have been decided in straight sets. Svitolina looks to win back-to-back matches for the third time since Miami. Svitolina has won five of her last seven matches on hard court.
Maria Sakkari is coming off a three sets win over Mayo Hibi that took 28 games to decide. In the victory, Sakkari won 69 percent of her first serve points and 42 percent of her second serve points. Sakkari won 57 percent of her total service points and converted on seven of her 15 break points. Sakkari got 55 percent of her first serves in play, saved five of her 20 break points and hit nine aces. Sakkari has also now won six of her last nine matches that have gone the distance. Sakkari looks to win three straight matches for the first time since making the semifinals in Rome. Sakkari has won three of her last four matches on hard court.
Svitolina won the only meeting, which was in this years Wimbledon, a match decided in three sets and 30 games.
This is going to be a competitive quarterfinal match that could be quite lengthy like the previous meeting earlier this year. Sakkari has a great chance to win if she continues to pile up the free points with her serve, but Svitolina is playing the better tennis overall and had Sakkari hit into 49 unforced errors in the previous meeting a couple of months ago. When Svitolina is playing to the level she’s capable of, she’s a tough player to bet against.
I like Svitolina to make the semifinals.
