Elina Svitolina vs Naomi Osaka - 01/23/19 WTA Tour - Australian Open Pick, Odds, and Prediction

Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

Ukrainian tennis superstar, Elina Svitolina will play Naomi Osaka from Japan in the quarterfinals of the 2019 WTA Australian Open. Both Svitolina and Osaka are ranked amongst in the top 10 meaning we should be able to witness an exceptional tennis match.

Elina Svitolina had a solid victory in her previous match as she beat Madison Keys in 3 sets. It was a determined performance by Svitolina as she won 4 break points to establish a big win. Since winning the WTA Finals at the end of 2018, Svitolina has been playing with great confidence which has been a huge reason for her success at this tournament. This match is expected to be the first major test for Elina Svitolina at the Australian Open but considering her recent wins, the Ukrainian will be feeling positive.

On the other side of the court, Naomi Osaka also won her previous match in 3 sets. Osaka beat Sevastova. During the win, Osaka served very well as she won 87% of her service games. The win was a great example of Osaka’s maturity as a player since she managed to stay very composed after losing the opening set. Like her opponent, this match is set to be the first major test for Naomi Osaka who will also be confident about her chances of winning.

Naomi Osaka and Elina Svitolina have played 5 times in the past. The most recent match between these two players was in 2018 at the WTA Miami Masters where Svitolina won in straight sets.

This match could go either way but I am going to predict that Elina Svitolina will win. Osaka has been playing very good tennis but Svitolina seems to have a sense of belief that Osaka has not yet shown. Svitolina has already fought out of many tough situations in this tournament and her hunger to win seems to be much higher than her opponents. With that in mind, I see Elina Svitolina winning this match.
