Svitolina showed great composure after dropping a tight second set tiebreak, but she’ll have to clan up the 27 unforced errors if she hopes to keep advancing. Svitolina has 36 unforced errors in her last three completed sets. Svitolina hopes to make her fifth career grand slam quarterfinal appearance and the first ever at Wimbledon. Svitolina is 4-4 in career grand slam fourth round matches. Svitolina has won three of her last five matches on grass court.
Petra Martic is coming off a three sets win over Danielle Collins that took 29 games to decide. Martic has won all three matches this tournament in three sets and has won each of her last 11 matches overall that have gone the distance. Martic hopes to make her second career grand slam quarterfinal and first since this years French Open. Martic is 1-4 in career grand slam fourth round matches. Martic has won six of her last seven matches on grass court.
These two have played four times and Svitolina has won each of the last three matches, including the most recent meeting last year in Rome. Martic’s only win over Svitolina came in the first ever meeting in 2013 Katowice. This will be the first ever match on grass.
Svitolina has made easy work against Martic on similar slow courts in the past and is winning matches despite being a bit sloppy. While it’s not encouraging that she’s making a lot of mistakes, it just shows what can happen if she just cleans them up even a little bit. Martic has been pushed to the limit in all three matches and usually fizzles out in grand slam play around this time.
Svitolina makes the quarterfinals of Wimbledon for the first time in her career.
