Elina Svitolina and Simona Halep meet in the semifinals of the 2019 tennis Qatar Open.
Elina Svitolina is coming off a straight sets win over Karolina Muchova that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Svitolina won 78 percent of her first serve points and 41 percent of her second serve points. Svitolina won 67 percent of her total service points and converted on four of her 11 break points. Svitolina has won all four sets this tournament and has produced a combined nine breaks during that span. Quietly one of the hottest players on tour right now, Svitolina has won 11 of her last 13 matches overall. Svitolina hopes to make her fifth final appearance since last year and the 16th final appearance of her career. Svitolina has won six of her last seven matches on indoor hard court.
Simona Halep is coming off a straight sets win over Julia Goerges that took 26 games to decide. In the victory, Halep won 63 percent of her first serve points and 39 percent of her second serve points. Halep won 58 percent of her total service points and converted on four of her seven break points. Halep has managed to win both matches in straight sets, but she’s had to work hard and can certainly improve her second serve. Halep is still recovering and trying to get in the swing of things, but her competitive spirit and return ability to has pushed her through even when not playing her best. Halep looks to make her seventh final appearance since last year and the 34th final appearance of her career. Halep has won five of her last six matches on indoor hard court.
These two have played six times and Svitolina has won four of those matches, including the most recent meeting in Rome last year. Svitolina is 2-1 against Halep on hard court and four of the six matches overall have been decided in straight sets.
This is a complete toss-up match, but you have to give Svitolina the edge based on h2h history and the fact Halep still isn’t 100 percent despite her recent victories. Halep has given her opponents too many break points and is fresh off a match in which she got nothing on her second serve.
Svitolina will make Halep pay for her mistakes, something her previous opponents haven't been able to do. Close match that could go the distance, but Svitolina has the edge.
