Elina Svitolina vs Zhang Shuai - 01/19/19 WTA Tour - Australian Open Pick, Odds, and Prediction

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

World number 6 from Ukraine, Elina Svitolina has made it into the third round of the 2019 WTA Australian Open. Elina Svitolina will know face Zhang Shuai from China.

Zhang Shuai won her previous match in straight sets as she beat Kristyna Pliskova. It was a good performance by Zhang as she dominated her opponents serve. Zhang won close to 45% of the points played during Pliskova’s serve which allowed her to control most of the match. It has been a tough start to the 2019 season for Zhang as she failed to perform at her previous two tournaments. While Zhang seems to be playing better tennis now, she will be tested greatly in this match as she is playing one of the best players in the world.

On the other side of the court, Elina Svitolina has looked in supreme form as she has won both of her matches in straight sets. In the previous round, Svitolina won with ease as she won 3 return games while winning all of her service games. Svitolina has been serving exceptionally well as she has only lost 1 service game in the entire tournament. Elina Svitolina ended 2018 with flying colours as she won the 2018 WTA Finals and she looks to have brought her good form into the 2019 season. As far as the conditions are concerned, Elina Svitolina has a great record in Australia as she won the Brisbane International last season. With the conditions favourable, Elina Svitolina will be very hard to beat.

Elina Svitolina and Zhang Shuai have played once in the past. Svitolina won that match.

All in all, I am picking Elina Svitolina to win this match. Svitolina is in supreme form and she has an exceptional record in Australia. With Zhang having a poor start to the 2019 season, I see her losing. This should be a simple victory for Elina Svitolina.
