Elise Mertens and Caroline Wozniacki meet in the semifinals of the 2018 Australian Open.

Elise Mertens is coming off a straight sets win over Elina Svitolina that took 16 games to decide. In the victory, Mertens won 67 percent of her first serve points and 65 percent of her second serve points. Mertens is having her breakthrough moment at 22 years old, and she’s fresh off a victory over a top-10 player in which she dominated her service game while winning 54 percent of her return points. Mertens is off to quite a start in 2018, and she’s won 21 of her last 25 sets played, so she’s certainly a confident player right now. It’ll be interesting to see if nerves catch up to the young Mertens, who hasn’t been in these big moments much. Mertens has a shot at her first career grand slam final appearance and her fourth singles final appearance overall. Mertens has split her last six semifinal appearances overall. Mertens has won 10 straight matches on hard court.

Caroline Wozniacki is coming off a straight sets win over Carla Suarez Navarro that took 27 games to decide. In the victory, Wozniacki won 70 percent of her first serve points and 58 percent of her second serve points. Wozniacki is coming off a quarterfinal victory in which she lost just two combined games in the two sets she won. Wozniacki has been dominant for the most part, and it all starts with her return in which she has won at least 39 percent of her return points in each match. Wozniacki hopes to make her third career grand slam final appearance. Wozniacki is 2-4 in her career in grand slam semifinal appearances. Wozniacki has never reached the final of the Australian Open. Wozniacki has won 10 of her last 11 matches on hard court.

These two have played once in the past, which was in the 2017 Swedish Open, a match Wozniacki won in three sets. The match took 30 games to be decided.

I bet against Mertens in her last match, and she made me look foolish. Mertens has a shot to win this match given her current form and the fact she hasn’t dropped a set. However, if Wozniacki is ever going to win a grand slam, it’s probably here with the way the draw has opened up. This is her chance, and she has the advantage with her defense, forcing Mertens to hit a ton of balls and increase those unforced errors numbers.

I like Wozniacki to reach the AO final.
