Elise Mertens and Dominika Cibulkova meet Friday in the semifinals of the 2017 Connecticut Open.
Elise Mertens is coming off a walkover victory over Shuai Zhang after she withdrew due to an arm injury. Mertens will be well rested for this match, which is good considering she’s already in good form, winning 10 of her last 11 sets played. Mertens has won no less than 42 percent of her return points and lost just seven games in her last match. However, Mertens could improve her service numbers considering she has been broken a combined eight times in her last three matches. Mertens has a chance to make her third final appearance of the season and third for her career. Mertens has split her last six semifinal appearances. Mertens has won six straight matches on hard court.
Dominika Cibulkova is coming off a straight sets win over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova that took 22 games to decide. In the victory, Cibulkova won 64 percent of her first serve points and 50 percent of her second serve points. Cibulkova is putting together some solid performances after struggles in grass and clay, and she’s coming off a match in which she won 47 percent of her return points. This tournament could be a shot in the arm for the confident and energetic Cibulkova as we head into the US Open. Cibulkova hopes to make her first final since last years WTA Finals and 19th for her career. Cibulkova has split her last six semifinal appearances. Cibulkova has won five of her last seven matches on hard court.
This will be the first time these two meet on the tennis court.
Martens does have the rest advantage and is playing some solid tennis right now, but we’re also talking about a young player who has had very little success on the big stage. Cibulkova is always tough to beat on hard court with her power shots and her aggressive return will eat Mertens serve alive. Mertens has had issues with her serve all tournament long, so this match doesn’t help.
This is a match Cibulkova should win in straight sets.
