Elise Mertens and Elina Svitolina meet in the quarterfinals of the 2018 Australian Open.

Elise Mertens is coming off a straight sets win over Petra Martic that took 25 games to decide. In the victory, Mertens won 74 percent of her first serve points and 38 percent of her second serve points. Mertens was broken four times and really struggled with her second serve, but she managed to hit 34 winners and close the deal in both sets when the pressure was at its peak. Despite some up and down play, Mertens has yet to drop a set this tournament and confidence has to be growing for the 22-year-old, who is now 9-0 in the 2018 season. This is Mertens’ first ever grand slam quarterfinal appearance and just her fifth grand slam appearance overall. Mertens has won five of her last six quarterfinal appearances on the WTA tour, two of which were walkovers, however. Mertens has won nine straight matches on hard court.

Elina Svitolina is coming off a straight sets win over Denisa Allertova that took 15 games to decide. In the victory, Svitolina won 79 percent of her first serve points and 45 percent of her second serve points. Svitolina has been in quite a zone recently, as she hasn’t lost since the WTA Championships and has dropped a combined seven games in her last two matches overall. Svitolina is serving at a high level, keeping her unforced errors down and is fresh off a match in which she won 56 percent of her return points. Svitolina appears to be ready for her breakthrough moment. Svitolina has a chance to make her first career grand slam semifinal appearance. Svitolina has lost both of her career grand slam quarterfinal matches. Svitolina has won nine straight matches on hard court.

These two have played once, which was in the 2017 İstanbul Cup, a match Svitolina won in straight sets. The match took 18 games to be decided.

The moment has yet to be too big for Mertens, and she is a dangerous player considering she hasn’t dropped a set up to this point. However, this is around the time when Cinderella’s get sent home, especially when playing experienced and elite players. Svitolina has been simply dialed in her last several matches and is giving away nothing easy. Mertens has also been shaky with her second serve all tournament, something Svitolina will eat alive if that continues.

Svitolina reaches her first grand slam semifinal.

Pick:
Elina Svitolina
