Ernests Gulbis and Marin Cilic meet Wednesday in the round of 16 at the Geneva Open.

Ernests Gulbis is coming off a straight sets win over Ricardas Berankis that took 23 games to decide. Gulbis is just trying to find his footing after splitting his last eight matches when you include qualifying. Gulbis started to fall off the map last year and it’s continued this season after he’s lost in the first round of a lot of recent tournaments. Gulbis was just a top-10 player a couple of seasons ago and made the semifinals of the 2014 French Open. Gulbis looks nothing like that right now as he’s lost seven of his last 11 matches overall. This will be Gulbis’ second career match at the Geneva Open.

Marin Cilic will play his first match this tournament and has had a lot of rest since losing to Gilles Simon back in Miami. Cilic has split his last 10 singles matches and hasn’t exactly looked great since making the final of the Marseille Open. Cilic’s time off should help him regroup as he looks to get back in the top-10 and regain some of his form that made him one of the best servers in the game. The problem is that Cilic isn’t the best on clay court and has split his last 10 matches on this surface as well. This is only Cilic’s third match at the Geneva Open, and he’s 1-1 in this tournament.

These two have played four times, and they’ve split down the middle at two apiece. Gulbis won the 2014 Madrid Masters and 2006 Furth Challenger, while Cilic won the 2007 St. Petersburg Open and 2007 Marrakech Challenger. Gulbis obviously won the most recent and probably most relevant match, and this will be the fourth time they meet on clay.

Gulbis is just unbackable in his current form. It’s just that simple. The time off should help Cilic, and it also helps that he’s by far the more talented player between these two.

Cilic wins this match easily.
