Evgeniya Rodina and Garbine Muguruza meet in the first round of the 2018 tennis US Open.
Evgeniya Rodina enters this tournament losing four of her last five matches, which includes failing to qualify for Cincinnati and Connecticut. Outside of a surprising fourth round appearance at this years Wimbledon, it’s been a very tough year for for the 29-year-old Russian. Rodina is struggling to get anything on her serve and is giving away way too many break points. However, Rodina can’t be slept on given what she did in London, which included a win over Madison Keys. That run will certainly be in the back of her opponents mind, regardless of her current form. This will be Rodina’s fourth career appearance at the US Open. Rodina has lost six straight matches on hard court.
Garbine Muguruza enters this tournament losing three of her last four matches, which includes a first round exit in Cincinnati. Muguruza is coming off a performance in which she won just 28 of her second serve points and gave her opponent 13 break points. Muguruza has lost six of her last 13 matches overall and can often look a little nonchalant on the court, which makes things even more frustrating. Which makes things even more concerning is that Muguruza has won just 50 percent of her US Open matches, which is head and shoulders her least successful grand slam. Muguruza hasn’t lost in the first round of a grand slam since the 2014 US Open. Muguruza has won seven of her last nine matches on hard court.
There’s no previous matches between these two players.
If you’re not afraid to take some shots at upsets and big odds, this is a match to consider. Muguruza is back in one of those funks where she can’t get anything going and she’s always struggled in New York. Rodina is in brutal form, but she has shown to pull out shocking wins from time to time. I don’t love this match from either side.
I’ll side with Muguruza, but I’m no confident at all. Rodina could win this match.
