Fabio Fognini and Borna Coric meet in the quarterfinal of the 2019 tennis Monte Carlo.
Fabio Fognini is coming off a straight sets win over Alexander Zverev that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Fognini won 75 percent of his first serve points and 64 percent of his second serve points. Fognini won 71 percent of his total service points and converted on three of his seven break points. Fognini was near flawless in his 13th career win over a top-10 player, and he’s extremely rested for this match considering he’s played just five sets to get to this point. Fognini has a chance to win four straight matches for the first time since winning the Los Cabos Open back in August. Fognini hopes to make his first semifinal in Monte Carlo since 2013 and his third career semifinal appearance overall in a Masters 1000. Fognini has won three of his last four matches on clay court.
Borna Coric is coming off a straight sets win over Pierre-Hugues Herbert that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Coric won 71 percent of his first serve points and 56 percent of his second serve points. Coric won 67 percent of his total service points and converted on three of his 11 break points. Coric also got 75 percent of his first serves in play and saved all three of his break points. It was easily one of the cleaner performances we’ve seen from Coric lately, as he’s needed a lot of three setters to advance these past few months. Coric hopes to win four straight matches for the first time since making the final of the Shanghai Masters last October. Coric hopes to make his first semifinal appearance in Monte Carlo and his third career semifinal appearance in a Masters 1000. Coric has won five of his last seven matches on clay court.
These two have played once, which was in Umag in 2014, a match Fognini won in three sets. The match took 34 games to be decided.
Fognini has had the most impressive win of these two and is probably the fresher player after only playing two matches to get to this point, but Coric is somebody who is starting to find himself and gain confidence in these type of tournaments. Coric is also more mentally tough than Fognini, which could be key in a match that’s sure to be tight and with so much on the line. This is a big match for both of these players who haven’t had a ton of deep runs in big tournaments.
I trust Coric a bit more, so I give him the edge.
