Austrian tennis superstar, Dominic Thiem has made it into the third round of the 2019 ATP Madrid Masters. Thiem will now play against Fabio Fognini from Italy.
Fabio Fognini won his previous match in straight sets as he defeated John Millman from Australia. It has been a very strong start to the clay season for Fabio Fognini as the Italian superstar won the Monte Carlo Masters. Fognini was superb in Monaco as he defeated the likes of Rafael Nadal, Borna Coric and Alexander Zverev. Fognini has continued his form at this tournament as he has not lost a single set all tournament. During the win against Millman, Fabio Fognini returned exceptionally well as he won 5 break points. With all that in mind, this is expected to be a challenge for Fabio Fognini as he is playing a top-class opponent.
On the other side of the coin, Dominic Thiem has also looked in outstanding form. Thiem won the Barcelona Open prior to arriving at Madrid. Thiem also had big wins as the Austrian beat both Nadal and Medvedev in Barcelona. It was a shaky start to the tournament for Dominic Thiem as he lost the opening set but things turned quickly as the final part of the match was dominated by the Austrian. Thiem looks very confident but he will have to be at his best as he is playing an inform Fognini.
Fabio Fognini and Dominic Thiem have played each other twice in the past. Thiem has won on 2 occasions while Fognini has won once. The most recent match between these two players was in 2018 at the Rome Masters where Fognini won in 3 sets.
This is expected to be a very close match and both Fognini and Thiem will have expectations of winning. As far as my prediction is concerned, I am going to pick Dominic Thiem to win this match. Fognini is an exceptional player but Thiem has been on another level over the past 12 months. Thiem has been impossible to beat on clay and has made big runs at tournaments such as the French Open. With the pressure set on both players, I see Thiem stepping up and taking the victory.
