Fabio Fognini and Juan-Martin Del Potro meet in the semifinals of the 2018 tennis China Open.
Fabio Fognini is coming off a straight sets win over Marton Fucsovics that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Fognini won 65 percent of his first serve points and 64 percent of his second serve points. Fognini won 65 percent of his total service points and saved four of his five break points. Fognini has now won each of his last six sets and has been very consistent with his serve to the point he’s been broken just once in his last two matches. Fognini is enjoying one of the best years of his career, as the inconsistent and unpredictable tennis has stopped, and he’s been making constant deep tournament runs the last few months. Fognini has a chance to make his fifth final appearance of the year and his 19th final of his career. Fognini has won six of his last seven matches on hard court.
Juan-Martin Del Potro is coming off a straight sets win over Filip Krajinovic that took 15 games to decide. In the victory, Del Potro won 83 percent of his first serve points and 57 percent of his second serve points. Del Potro won 74 percent of his total service points and saved all three of his break points. Del Potro has won all six sets this tournament and has been broken a combined two times. As long as Del Potro continues to serve at this level, which has been the driving force for his success the last few months, he has to be considered the favorite to win this tournament. Del Potro won the last eight points of his last match and has won 13 of his last 16 matches overall. Del Potro hopes to make his sixth final of the year and his 35th final appearance of his career. Del Potro has won nine of his last 10 matches on hard court.
These two have split the only two meetings, as Del Potro won in 2015 in Sydney and Fognini won this year in Los Cabos. Fognini is 3-2 against Del Potro in sets played.
Both of these players are enjoying some of their best and most consistent success in years, so you can make a strong case for either guy. The problem is Del Potro has taken his game to another level and has his serve completely dialed in. This could be one of those matches where Fognini presses and tries to do a little too much, digging a hole for him at some point. Fognini will have to be brilliant with his shotmaking to pull this one off.
Del Potro reaches his sixth final of the year.
