Flavia Pennetta vs. Serena Williams 2014 US Open Pick, Odds, Prediction

Flavia Pennetta and Serena Williams will play in the 2014 US Open quarterfinals.

After struggling a bit in her first round match against Julia Goerges, Flavia Pennetta has rolled through all of her competitors, winning her last three matches in straight sets. Pennetta’s most recent victory came against Casey Dellacqua, a match that took just 20 games to be decided. In the victory, Pennetta had four aces, won 79 percent of her first serve points and averaged a first serve speed of 101 mph. Flavia Pennetta has won seven of her last nine single matches overall and is always a strong dark horse candidate to win any match when she’s at the very top of her game. Pennetta is hitting the ball well and limiting her errors, which is the reason for her success in this tournament. Of course, Pennetta is looking to reach her second straight semifinals performance in the US Open with a win here.

Serena Williams has yet to lose a set through her first four matches and has played no more than 18 games in a single match. Serena’s most recent win was a quick match against Kaia Kanepi. In the win, Serena won 71 percent of her net points, hit 19 winners and picked up her average first serve speed to 106 mph. Of course, Serena’s lack of serve speed has worried me a little in this tournament, but it seems to be getting better and has yet to impact her play in a negative way. Serena Williams is back in her groove, winning now nine straight singles matches, which doesn’t include her success in the doubles with her sister Venus Williams. This is Serena’s first quarterfinals appearance in a major this year, and she hasn’t lost in the quarterfinals since the 2013 Australian Open.

These two have played each other six times, and Serena Williams leads the series, 5-1. Flavia Pennetta’s only victory over Serena came in the 2005 Canadian Masters due to a withdraw. The last meeting between these two was in this year’s Cincinnati Masters, a match that was decided in 16 games.

While Pennetta is a fiery player and has the potential to make things interesting, you’d be crazy to pick anybody but Serena with the way she’s played the last few weeks. Don’t be surprised if it’s another quick match.
