American tennis superstar, Frances Tiafoe will play against Bernard Tomic from Australia in the opening round of the 2019 ATP Atlanta Open.
Bernard Tomic last played at the Hall of Fame Open where the Australian was eliminated in the opening round. It was a poor match for Tomic as the Australian struggled with his receiving. Bernard Tomic only won 25% of his return points which meant that he could only break serve on 1 occasion. Tomic enters this match in poor form as he has a record of only 4-7 since the French Open.
Bernard Tomic last won an ATP title in 2018 but the Australian has been playing poorly for the past few seasons. This is expected to be a tough match for Bernard Tomic as he is playing against the number 5 seed.
On the other side of the coin, Frances Tiafoe enters this tournament following a poor Wimbledon campaign where he was eliminated in the opening round. While the loss was not ideal, Tiafoe played well and was beaten by a very accomplished player in Fabio Fognini. It has been a tough few months for Frances Tiafoe as the American has struggled since the Estoril Open where he made the quarterfinals. Returning to the USA should give Frances Tiafoe a big boost as the American has a good record on home soil. Earlier in the season. Frances Tiafoe made the quarterfinals of the Miami Open. Tiafoe has shown great ability on hard court as he made the quarterfinals of the Australian Open in January.
This will be the first time that Frances Tiafoe and Bernard Tomic will be playing each other at an ATP tournament.
Taking everything into consideration, I am going to pick Frances Tiafoe to win this match. Tomic has been playing very poorly in recent seasons and I don’t see the Australian having enough to beat one of the top seeds. Tiafoe has an outstanding record on home soil and the American should be boosted by the support from the crowd. Tiafoe is the stronger player and I see him being too good for Tomic in this match.
