Spanish tennis veteran, David Ferrer, has made it into the third round of the 2019 ATP Miami Open. At this stage of the tournament, David Ferrer will play against Frances Tiafoe from the United States.
David Ferrer caused a major upset in the previous round as he eliminated the number 2 seed, Alexander Zverev. It was a determined performance by Ferrer as he lost the opening set but fought back extremely well to win the final 2 sets. During the victory, Ferrer impressed with his receiving as he won 44% of his return points which allowed him to break Zverev’s serve on 5 occasions. Ferrer turned back the years and showed great defence during the win but it may be tough for the Spaniard to play another tough match in this round considering the heat and the fact that he is past his peak fitness.
On the other side of the court, Frances Tiafoe had a much simpler match in the second round as he defeated Miomir Kecmanović win straight sets. Tiafoe won 75% of his service games and broke his opponents serve on 3 occasions to setup the win. Tiafoe has received exceptional support throughout this event as he is playing on home soil and that is expected to continue in this match.
This will be the first time that David Ferrer and Frances Tiafoe will be playing each other at an ATP event.
Taking everything into notice, I am going to pick Frances Tiafoe to win this match. David Ferrer is coming off a very physical match against Alexander Zverev and I don’t see the Spaniard being able to repeat such a display considering the heat at the venue. Tiafoe looks in good form and I see him winning this match and earning a place in the fourth round.
