The Line: -- Over/Under:
Frances Tiafoe and Pablo Cuevas meet in the quarterfinals of the 2019 tennis Estoril Open.
Frances Tiafoe is coming off a three sets win over Yoshihito Nishioka that took 30 games to decide. In the victory, Tiafoe won 60 percent of his first serve points and 54 percent of his second serve points. Tiafoe won 58 percent of his total service points and converted on four of his five break points. Tiafoe showed great heart in his second round match after being down a set and a break, looking like it was going to be a quick exit for the American. Tiafoe managed to comeback in the second set and eventually win a third set tiebreak after failing to close it out on his racket. The talent has always been there, but Tiafoe is starting to show great mental toughness as well. Tiafoe has a chance to win three matches for the second time in his last three tournaments. Tiafoe has won two of his last three matches on clay court.
Pablo Cuevas is coming off a straight sets win over Filippo Baldi that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Cuevas won 88 percent of his first serve points and 47 percent of his second serve points. Cuevas won 75 percent of his total service points and converted on three of his nine break points. Cuevas has won all four sets this tournament and has been lights out with his first serve in both victories. Cuevas has really piled up the wins on clay gives himself a real chance to keep making noise if he’s going to serve at this level. Cuevas has a chance to win three matches for the second time in his last four tournaments. Cuevas has won 10 of his last 12 matches on clay court.
There’s no match history between these two players.
Tiafoe is the more talented player and somebody I look to bet on often when playing well, but you have to question how much he has left in the tank after a physical and mentally draining match. It’s not easy to rebound from a match like that had so many twists and turns. Cuevas is the fresher player and has been on an absolute tear on clay these past couple of months.
I give Cuevas the edge in this quarterfinal match.
