The Line: -- Over/Under:
Gael Monfils and Daniil Medvedev meet in the semifinals of the 2019 tennis Rotterdam Open.
Gael Monfils is coming off a straight sets win over Damir Dzumhur that took 15 games to decide. In the victory, Monfils won 67 percent of his first serve points and 58 percent of his second serve points. Monfils won 63 percent of his total service points and converted on five of his eight break points. Monfils has won six of his seven sets this tournament and has made back-to-back semifinal trips in his last two tournaments. It’s amazing what happens when Monfils plays to win and focuses much less on antics that have hurt his career at times. Monfils hopes to make his first final appearance since the 2018 European Open and the 29th final appearance of his career. Monfils has won eight of his last 10 matches on indoor hard court.
Daniil Medvedev is coming off a straight sets win over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Medvedev won 82 percent of his first serve points and 59 percent of his second serve points. Medvedev won 73 percent of his total service points and saved both of his break points. Medvedev has now won 14 straight sets and has become much more effective with his return. When Medvedev has both his serve and his return working, you get the dominant player you’re starting to see now. Medvedev hopes to make his third final appearance of the year and the seventh final appearance of his career. Medvedev has won eight of his last nine matches on indoor hard court.
These two have played once, which was in Sofia last week, a match Medvedev won in straight sets. The match took 18 games to be decided.
Monfils is capable of winning this match when he plays every point hard, but it’s hard to ignore the form of Medvedev and the fact he just beat the Frenchman in straight sets last week. Medvedev has won 14 of his last 16 matches and hasn’t dropped many sets during that span. With his third final appearance this year on the line, it’s really hard to bet against Medvedev when he’s playing this well.
I like Medvedev to advance to the final.
