Gael Monfils and Gilles Simon meet Saturday in the third round of the 2015 Wimbledon.
Gael Monfils is coming off a straight sets win over Adrian Mannarino, which took just over an hour and a half. Monfils is getting at least 58 percent of his first serves in play and is winning at least 85 percent of those points. Monfils is winning at least 62 percent of his second serve points and has produced six double faults. Monfils has combined for 31 aces, 83 winners and 40 unforced errors in his first two matches. Monfils is doing a fabulous job on his first serve and has kept his unforced errors to a reasonable number. The only concern with Monfils is a lack of focus if he puts himself in an early hole. Monfils has been eliminated in a grand slam in the third round or earlier.
Gilles Simon is fresh off a four set victory over Blaz Kavcic, which took two and a half hours. Simon is getting at least 57 percent of his first serves in play and has won at least 71 percent of those points. Simon has won at least 50 percent of his second serve points and has produced four double faults. Simon has combined for 19 aces, 59 winners and 44 unforced errors in his first two matches. Simon is coming off a match in which he hit 43 winners, and he’s been doing a great job winning his first serve points. Simon should also be confident after giving up just one game in three of his last four sets. Simon has been bounced in the third round of a grand slam in four of his last six appearances.
These two have played six times in the past, and Simon has won five of those meetings. The most recent match was this year at the Open 13, a match Simon won in three sets. Monfils’ only victory over Simon came in Montpellier in 2012. This is their first meeting on grass.
While Simon has owned Monfils in his career, four of the last five matches have gone the distance. So, a bounce here or there, and it won’t be so lopsided. I’m a big fan of Monfils and think he can hang with anyone when actually focused. Monfils is playing the better tennis right now as well, which is why I give him the slight edge.
