Pouille vs. Monfils

The Line: -- Over/Under:
Gael Monfils and Lucas Pouille meet in the quarterfinals of the 2016 US Open.
Gael Monfils is coming off a straight sets win over Marcos Baghdatis that took 26 games to decide. In the victory, Monfils won 66 percent of his first serve points and 50 percent of his second serve points. Monfils continues to play some of his best tennis of his career, as he’s serving at a high percentage and not racking up a ton of silly unforced errors. Monfils hasn’t dropped a set all tournament and is fresh off a match that took less than two hours. It’s amazing what Monfils is capable of when he focuses on winning and less on pleasing the crowd. Monfils has a chance to make his second career grand slam semifinal. Monfils has won 15 of his last 18 matches on hard court.
Lucas Pouille is coming off a five set win over Rafael Nadal that took 47 games to decide. In the victory, Pouille won 66 percent of his first serve points and 58 percent of his second serve points. Pouille managed to win a marathon match that took over four hours and was able to find a way to victory despite being a massive underdog. While the performance was incredible, it’s only fair to question how much he has left in the tank after such a grueling match and with a quick turnaround. Pouille has now strung together back-to-back grand slam quarterfinals. Pouille hopes to make his first grand slam semifinal appearance. Pouille has won eight of his last 11 matches on hard court.
These two have played once in the past, which was in the 2015 Australian Open, a match Monfils won in five sets.
I’ve been riding the Monfils bandwagon all season and that’s not changing here against a young Pouille who just played four hours. Monfils hasn’t had a long match yet and is playing some of his best tennis of his life. I’m not sure Pouille has enough left in the tank to get up for another match.
I like Monfils to advance to the semifinals.
