Gael Monfils and Milos Raonic square off in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Australian Open.

Gael Monfils is coming off a four set victory over Andrey Kuznetsov and has lost one set this tournament. Monfils is getting at least 62 percent of his first serves in play and is winning no less than 65 percent of those points. Monfils has combined for 77 winners in his last two matches and has 32 or less unforced errors in all four matches. Monfils has looked sharp thus far considering he just lost to Benoit Paire in the Paris Masters. As long as Monfils can limit his unforced errors and his antics, he’ll be a tough out the rest of the way. This is Monfils’ third grand slam quarterfinal appearance since 2012. Monfils has made just one semifinal grand slam appearance, which was the 2008 French Open.

Milos Raonic is coming off a five set win over Stan Wawrinka and has dropped two sets this tournament. Raonic is getting at least 58 percent of his first serves in play and is winning no less than 79 percent of those points. Raonic has racked up 194 winners in his last three matches and has had 59 or less unforced errors in all four matches. Raonic is currently undefeated in 2016, which includes an upset victory over Roger Federer in the Brisbane International. This is Raonic’s fourth grand slam quarterfinal appearance since 2014. Raonic has reached a grand slam semifinal once in his career, which was the 2014 Wimbledon.

These two have played twice, and Monfils has won both meetings. The most recent match was in the 2013 Halle Open, and they also played in the 2011 Stockholm Open. Raonic has won one of the five sets he’s played against Monfils. This will be the second time Monfils and Raonic meet on hard court.

The history can be thrown out the window considering it’s so small and so old. Raonic is a far better player than he was a few years ago. Also, Monfils really hasn’t played anybody leading up to this points, while Raonic has wins over two top-10 players already this year. I love Monfils and his game, but this is a bad matchup.

Look for Raonic to get the victory.
