Tennis | Belinda Bencic vs Garbine Muguruza
Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Garbine Muguruza will play against Belinda Bencic in the opening round of the 2018 WTA Pan Pacific Open.

Belinda Bencic is a former top 10 ranked player and while she has a had a drop of form since her injury, the Swiss player is beginning to regain some form. Bencic has had a decent run of form in recent months as she has managed to make the quarterfinals of both the Washington Open and Connecticut Open. The Pan Pacific Open is a tournament where Belinda Bencic has done well in the past as she finished runners-up in 2015. With the fond memories of this tournament, Bencic will look to make another deep run in the tournament.

On the other side of the court, Garbine Muguruza will look to find her form after a tough US Open. Muguruza was eliminated in the second round at the US Open and she will look to recover from the disappointment with a strong tournament. The hard courts in Asia have always treated Garbine Muguruza well as she has some strong records in this continent including a China Open title. Garbine Muguruza is world number 7 and a very talented player who will be very hard to stop especially in conditions she has done well in.

These two players have played once in the past with the match ending in Bencic winning that match. The encounter occurred at this venue in 2015.

This will be a very interesting match but I am going to side with Garbine Muguruza to win. Bencic is a great player and has done well in this tournament previously but she is not the player she was in 2015. Since her injury, Bencic is a much weaker prospect and I think Garbine Muguruza is a much better player at this moment in time. The world number 7 is very strong in Asia and that is why I am picking Garbine Muguruza to make it into the second round of this tournament.

Pick:
Garbine Muguruza
