The Line: -- Over/Under:
Garbine Muguruza and Johanna Larsson meet in the second round of the 2019 tennis French Open.
Garbine Muguruza is coming off a three sets win over Taylor Townsend that took 28 games to decide. In the victory, Muguruza won 73 percent of her first serve points and 50 percent of her second serve points. Muguruza won 67 percent of her total service points and converted on five of her nine break points. Muguruza dominated the match after dropping the first set and got 74 percent of her first serves in play while hitting 37 winners. Muguruza could use a faster start, but you have to be encouraged by her first serve and her shotmaking skills in her opener. Muguruza has now won six of her last nine matches that have gone the distance. Muguruza hopes to make the third round of a grand slam for the seventh time in her last 10 tries. Muguruza has won three of her last four matches on clay court.
Johanna Larsson is coming off a straight sets win over Magdalena Rybarikova that took 19 games to decide. In the victory, Larsson won 75 percent of her first serve points and 52 percent of her second serve points. Larsson won 67 percent of her total service points and converted on three of her eight break points. Larsson got 63 percent of her first serves in play and saved two of her three break points. Entering this tournament losing nine of her last 10 matches, it was a highly impressive performance from Larsson and she’s now in the second round of the French Open for the second time in her career, easily her most successful grand slam. Larsson hopes to make the third round of a grand slam for the first time since the 2016 US Open. Larsson has won two of her last three matches on clay court.
There’s no match history between these two players.
Outside of the Fed Cup back in February, Larsson hasn’t won back-to-back matches since Nurnberg last year, which is a calendar year away. Give her credit for her first round win, but we need to see consistency before giving her any sort of chance of moving forward. Muguruza needed three sets to prevail, but she looked good down the stretch and gives herself a chance of a really deep run if she keeps getting her first serves in play.
Give me Muguruza in straight sets this time.
