Spanish tennis superstar, Garbine Muguruza will begin her 2019 WTA Indian Wells Open in the second round where she will face Lauren Davis from the United States.
It has been a decent start to the Indian Wells Open for Lauren Davis as she won her opening match in straight sets against Anna Karolína Schmiedlová. During the win, Davis received serve exceptionally well as she won 51% of her return points. Lauren Davis broke Anna Karolína Schmiedlová’s serve on 5 occasions meaning that the American won an impressive 50% of her return games. This is expected to be a much tougher match for Davis as she is playing a significantly more accomplished player in Garbine Muguruza.
On the other side of the coin, Garbine Muguruza received an opening round bye due to her high seeding. Muguruza last played at the Dubai Tennis Championships where he made the third round before being beaten by Elina Svitolina. It has been a decent season for Muguruza although she has not made it past the quarter-final stage of any tournament this year. Muguruza’s record at WTA Indian Wells is not elite as she has only won 56% of her matches at this venue. With that in mind, Muguruza is a very accomplished player who has won 2 Grand Slams so she will enter this event with some confidence.
Lauren Davis and Garbine Muguruza have played each other once in the past. The match was played in 2013 at the WTA Rosmalen Grass Court Championships where Muguruza won in straight sets.
Taking everything into consideration, I am going to pick Garbine Muguruza to win this match. Muguruza is a much more accomplished player when compared to Lauren Davis. Muguruza has been in decent form and I see her being too strong for her opponent in this match.
