Spanish superstar, Garbine Muguruza will play Luksika Kumkhum from Thailand in the quarterfinals of the 2018 WTA Hong Kong Open.
Luksika Kumkhum had a big win over Alize Cornet in the second round as the Thai player beat the number 8 seed in 3 sets. In that win, Luksika Kumkhum received serve exceptionally well as she won 6 of Cornet’s service games. Furthermore, Luksika Kumkhum won important points from the Cornet serve during her tiebreaker win in the third set. That being said, Luksika Kumkhum served very poorly as she lost 6 of her own service games. Building on that, Luksika Kumkhum won less than 60% of her service points. Such a poor service game could be costly in this match meaning that Luksika Kumkhum must improve her serve if she wishes to compete with Muguruza.
Garbine Muguruza, on the other hand, has been in great form in this tournament. Muguruza won her last match in straight sets by dominating her opponent. Muguruza only lost 3 games in the entire match while breaking her opponents serve on 5 occasions in the process. In the entire tournament, Garbine Muguruza has only lost 7 games which show she has been winning with ease. In this tournament, Muguruza has won 10 break points and with Luksika Kumkhum having issues with her serve, the Spaniard will fancy her chances of exploiting her opponent's weakness.
This will be the first time that Luksika Kumkhum and Garbine Muguruza will be playing each other at a WTA event.
While Luksika Kumkhum has done extremely well to make it this far in the tournament, I see her run ending. Garbine Muguruza is a much more accomplished player and the Spaniard looks in dominant form. With Luksika Kumkhum having serving problems, Muguruza’s game is perfectly suited to gain a big advantage. Taking all the information into consideration, I see Muguruza winning and making the semifinals of the tournament.
