The Line: -- Over/Under:
Garbine Muguruza and Naomi Broady meet in the first round of the 2018 tennis Wimbledon.
Garbine Muguruza enters this tournament just 1-1 on grass this season and is coming off a rough performance in which she won just 57 percent of her first serve points and 35 percent of her second serve points. Muguruza has been a bit of a hit or miss all season long, but she’s proven over the years she can never be counted out in grand slam play. Muguruza has made at least the quarterfinals in three of her last six grand slam appearances and has won 79 percent of her Wimbledon matches, making this her second best grand slam in terms of winning percentage. Muguruza enters as one of the favorites to win this tournament. Muguruza hasn’t lost in the first round of a grand slam since the 2014 US Open. Muguruza has won eight of her last nine matches on grass court.
Naomi Broady enters this tournament losing each of her last three matches and will play in her first grand slam since the 2017 Wimbledon. Broady has struggled mightily with her return and is coming off a loss to Natalia Vikhlyantseva in which she won just eight of 44 return points. It’s fair to say that Broady has seen better days and could use a pick me up performance to kind of turn her season around. Unfortunately, Broady has shown much recently to suggest she can win a match of this caliber. Broady has never beaten a top-10 player in her career. Broady hopes to make the second round of a grand slam for the third time in her career. Broady has lost four straight matches on grass court.
These two have played once, which was in 2011 challenger play, a match Muguruza won in straight sets. The match took 20 games to be decided.
Broady has shown very little to nothing as of late and hasn’t played in a grand slam in a year. Muguruza has been hit or miss recently and is known to throw in a stinker now and then, but she’s consistently solid in grand slam matches and hasn’t lost in the first round in nearly four years. This should be a routine match for defending champion.
Muguruza rolls in straight sets.
