Garbine Muguruza and Petra Kvitova play Friday morning in the WTA Championships.

Garbine Muguruza is looking extremely sharp in her first WTA Finals, as she’s coming off wins over Lucie Safarova and Angelique Kerber. Muguruza has yet to drop a set this tournament and has now won nine of her last 10 singles matches. Muguruza has been very aggressive this tournament and has been able to pounce on any opening her opponent gives her. Muguruza has done a great job of painting the lines and putting her powerful ground strokes to good use. At 22 years old and easily playing in some of the biggest matches of her life right now, Muguruza has also shown very little signs of nerves and is playing with a confidence like she knows she belongs on this stage.

Petra Kvitova has been up-and-down this tournament with a loss to Angelique Kerber and a victory over Lucie Safarova. Kvitova looked much better in her most recent match by taking advantage of unforced errors and hitting big winners when she needed to most. Kvitova has certainly been in questionable form as of late but showed against Safarova that she shouldn’t be slept on when she comes into a match focused and healthy. Kvitova has now won six of her last 10 matches overall but has lost four of her last six matches on hard court. Of course, Kvitova has reached at least the semifinals of the WTA Finals in two of her last four appearances.

This will be the first time these two ever meet on the tennis court.

For me, this match is a rather easy pick, as Muguruza has been far more consistent this tournament and is in far greater form right now. Kvitova is certainly no pushover given her talent when healthy and her experience, but Muguruza is just on a mission right now and should be expected to get the victory here.
