Garbine Muguruza and Samantha Stosur meet in the semifinals of the 2016 French Open.
Garbine Muguruza is coming off a straight sets win over Shelby Rogers that took 21 games to decide. In the victory, Muguruza won 75 percent of her first serve points and 59 percent of her second serve points. Muguruza has not lost a set in her last four matches and is winning at least 71 percent of her first serve points in this tournament. Muguruza has racked up 58 winners and 43 unforced errors in her last two matches. Muguruza is playing some lights out tennis at the moment and currently looks like the biggest threat to Serena WIlliams for the French Open title. Muguruza hopes to make her second career grand slam final and first since the 2015 Wimbledon.
Samantha Stosur is coming off a straight sets win over Tsvetana Pironkova that took 23 games to decide. In the victory, Stosur won 60 percent of her first serve points and 54 percent of her second serve points. Stosur has lost just two sets this tournament overall and is winning at least 60 percent of her first serve points. Stosur has racked up 50 winners and 50 unforced errors in her last two matches. Stosur continues her impressive 2016 season and looks like somebody who wants to get back into the top-20 in the world. Stosur has five wins over top-10 players since 2014. Stosur looks to reach her second career grand slam final and first since the 2011 US Open.
These two have met once in the past, which was in the 2014 Madrid Masters, a match Stosur won in three sets. The match took 28 games to decide. This will obviously be their second match on clay court.
You have to appreciate Stosur and the way she’s playing at the moment. But Muguruza has given us no reason to bet against her this tournament and has been far more consistent with her service game. Also, I think the constant rain delays helped in Stosur’s victory over Simona Halep, as she was getting beat up before the suspension.
You have to like Muguruza to advance to the French Open final.
