Garbine Muguruza and Shelby Rogers meet in the quarterfinals of the 2016 French Open.
Garbine Muguruza is coming off a straight sets win over Svetlana Kuznetsova that took 19 games to decide. In the victory, Muguruza won 74 percent of her first serve points and 48 percent of her second serve points. Muguruza has won her last three matches in straight sets and has won no less than 71 percent of her first serve points. Muguruza has lost just 12 games in her last three matches and is looking more and more like the player we saw last year rather than the player who came into this tournament with inconsistencies. Muguruza is a very dangerous player right now in her current form. Muguruza hopes to make the semifinals of a grand slam for the second time in her career and first since the 2015 Wimbledon.
Shelby Rogers is coming off a straight sets win over Irina-Camelia Begu that took 19 games to decide. In the victory, Rogers won 65 percent of her first serve points and 67 percent of her second serve points. Rogers has beaten three top-30 players to get to this point and is by far the cinderella of the tournament. Rogers has 40 winners in her last two matches and is getting no less than 60 percent of her first serves in play. Rogers has experienced very little WTA success in her young career, so at this point she’s playing with house money, making her a sneaky player in this match. Rogers has a shot at her first career grand slam semifinal appearance. Rogers previous deepest grand slam run was a third round spot in last years US Open.
This will be the first time these two meet on the tennis court.
You have to respect what Rogers has done, as nobody expected another American besides Serena and Venus Williams to make the quarterfinals of the French Open. Rogers has been impressive and has beaten some quality names, including a top-10 player in Petra Kvitova. However, Muguruza is playing at another level right now and simply chewing up her opponent and spitting them out.
It should be no different here, as Muguruza continues her hot streak and advances to the semifinals.
