Garbine Muguruza vs. Victoria Azarenka

The Line: Muguruza -152 / Azarenka +138 -- Over/Under:
Garbine Muguruza and Victoria Azarenka meet in the first round of the 2019 tennis Stuttgart.
Garbine Muguruza is coming off a title at the Monterrey Open, but she also just lost back-to-back three set matches in the Fed Cup. It continues to be up and down with Muguruza, making it very tough to predict her matches and she’s becoming a player it’s probably best to avoid unless you have a really good feel on her current form. One minute Muguruza looks like the grand slam winner capable of beating anybody, the next minute she’s an unforced error machine and struggling to put away a player outside of the top-100. Unfortunately, we have no idea what to expect from Muguruza at the moment. Muguruza has won seven of her last 10 matches on clay court.
Victoria Azarenka split her two Fed Cup matches and is currently playing the most consistent tennis we’ve seen since her return from pregnancy. Azarenka has won nine of her last 14 matches overall, which includes a final appearance in Monterrey and a win over Angelique Kerber. Azarenka has become much more comfortable with her serve and has cleaned up the unforced errors. I’m not ready to say Azarenka is back to being at her best, which would include a contender in grand slam play, but she’s certainly a player to keep an eye on and is no longer an automatic fade like she was when trying to return to the sport. Azarenka has lost her last three matches on clay court.
The two have split the previous two meetings, as Muguruza won the match this year in Monterrey and Azarenka won the 2016 meeting in Miami. The match earlier this month was cut short due to a retirement. This will obviously be the first meeting on clay.
I really wanted to side with Azarenka and the plus money, as I hate having to back Muguruza when she’s not playing her absolute best. Muguruza gets down on herself and things can get very ugly. However, Muguruza was in complete control against Azarenka in their match a few weeks ago, and she’s much more comfortable on clay.
This is a match that should favor Muguruza, but obviously anything goes when she’s not hitting her spots.
