Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Garbine Muguruza and Zhang Shuai will both playing their first match at the 2018 WTA Elite Trophy on Wednesday as they play against each other.

With this tournament being played in China, Zhang Shuai will enjoy the support of her home crowd. It has been a good few months leading up to this event for Zhang as she has made two semifinals and one quarterfinal appearance. It seems that playing in her home country seems to bring out the best in Zhang Shuai as many of her most impressive performances have been while playing in China.

On the other side of the court, Garbine Muguruza has struggled over the past few months. With issues related to injury and loss of form, Muguruza has dropped out of the top 10 in the WTA rankings. That being said, Muguruza seems to have found some form as she played well at the WTA Hong Kong Open where she made the semifinals. This will be the second time that Garbine Muguruza will be playing at the WTA Elite Trophy with her last appearance at this event occurred in 2014 where she made the semifinals.

Garbine Muguruza and Zhang Shuai have played 3 times in the past with Zhang winning on one occasion while Muguruza has won two times. The most recent match between these two players was at the US Open this season where Garbine Muguruza won in straight sets. Muguruza’s other win over Zhang was at the 2017 Miami Masters where she won in 3 sets. Zhang won the first meeting between these two players which as at WTA Doha in 2017.

While Zhang is playing at home and has been in great form, I am going to side with Garbine Muguruza. Muguruza is a very skilled and experienced player. With an apparent return of form at the Hong Kong Open, I see Muguruza playing at her best and winning this match.

Pick:
Garbiñe Muguruza
