Gilles Muller and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez meet in the round of 16 at the 2016 Ricoh Open.
Gilles Muller is coming off a straight sets win over Robin Haase that took 23 games to decide. Muller is just trying to find some consistency, as he lost his last four matches heading into this tournament, including a first round exit in the French Open. Muller has been struggling with his service game lately, as he’s won one or less games in two of the last four sets he’s lost. However, Muller looked sharp in his opening match here and was able to win a first set tiebreak as well. Muller has not won back-to-back matches since reaching the semifinals of this year's Sofia Open. Muller has won 10 of his last 14 matches on grass court.
Guillermo Garcia-Lopez is coming off a straight sets win over Vasek Pospisil that took 21 games to decide. Garcia-Lopez is also looking to get back on track after splitting his last 10 matches and probably not playing consistent tennis since the Australian Open when he pushed Kei Nishikori in the third round. A rather quick victory over a top-50 player has to make Garcia-Lopez feel good, especially considering grass is far from his favorite surface. We know what Garcia-Lopez is capable of when he’s hitting the ball well, but it’s all about consistency with the 33-year-old who has been hit or miss all season. Garcia-Lopez has lost seven of his last 10 matches on grass court.
These two have met five times in the past, and Garcia-Lopez has won four of those meetings. Muller won the most recent match in this year's Sofia Open. All the other matches took place in 2009 or earlier, and this will be the second match on grass.
The head to head doesn’t mean much considering they’ve played one match since 2009, Garcia-Lopez is a lot older and Muller won the match this season in straight sets. It’s hard to decide who is going to show up given their shaky form, but Muller overall is the better player right now.
So, if forced to pick, you have to expect Muller to get the victory.
