French veteran, Gilles Simon, meets young French player, Harold Mayot in the first-round of the 2020 Marseille Open.
Gilles Simon is one of the most consistent players on the ATP Tour. Simon makes you play every ball, and doesn't give up without a fight. Simon is a great example to younger players of the mentality you should have when playing tennis. Simon has a big serve and his backhand is incredible. Here in France, it is a certain that Simon can challenge for the title as he loves playing at home. Gilles Simon is towards the latter end of his career, therefore he will want to make the most of the remaining opportunities he has to challenge on the tennis court. Will Simon be able to achieve a 15th career title here in Marseille?
Harold Mayot is a very young French player. Not much is known about him, but after doing some research on him in challenger level tournaments, he has a lot of potential. Mayot is great in baseline rallies, he just needs to improve his overall game and mentality. Mayot will find this to be the big stage and it will be interesting to see how he handles the situation. Will Mayot come out and be nervous, or will he see it as an opportunity to prove himself as he has nothing to lose?
This will be the first meeting between both players, and unfortunately for Mayot, I see this going only one way. Simon is much more experienced than Mayot, he is stronger, both physically and mentally, and is determined to challenge for the title here in Marseille. Expect Simon to come out and dictate play from the start, and a nervous Mayot to crumble.
Gilles Simon to win.
