Grigor Dimitrov and Jared Donaldson meet in the second round of the 2018 tennis French Open.

Grigor Dimitrov is coming off a straight sets win over Mohamed Safwat that took 30 games to decide. In the victory, Dimitrov won 88 percent of his first serve points and 59 percent of his second serve points. Dimitrov managed to win 77 percent of his total service points and was broken just once in his victory. It was one of Dimitrov’s most complete showings as of late and something he can build on moving forward. The one thing Dimitrov can improve on, however, are the 28 unforced errors, as it allowed the last two sets to be closer than they probably should have been. Regardless, solid performance from the top-10 player in the world. Dimitrov has been bounced before the third round of a grand slam two times since 2016. Dimitrov has split his last eight matches on clay court.

Jared Donaldson is coming off a five sets win over Nicolas Jarry that took 47 games to decide. In the victory, Donaldson won 76 percent of his first serve points and 59 percent of his second serve points. Donaldson was able to grind out a marathon match by winning 67 percent of his service points and hitting just 23 unforced errors in five sets. Despite five unforced errors, it was an overall clean performance from the young American and snapped what was a serious drought on clay court. The one concern for Donaldson moving forward is the fatigue, as he’s had very little grand slam success and just played five draining sets that took almost three hours to complete. Donaldson hopes to make the third round of a grand slam for the third time in his career. Donaldson has lost five of his last seven matches on clay court.

These two have never played before.

Dimitrov is capable of losing given his hit or miss form, but experience matters in grand slam play and fatigue is also key. Playing five sets this early kills those legs and makes it tough to beat somebody more talented than you. Donaldson has his work cut out for him here, not to mention he’s lost five of his last seven matches on clay.

This is a favorable match for Dimitrov, and I expect him to get the job done.
