One of the more interesting matches of the 2020 Rio Open first-round takes place as Guido Pella meets Thiago Monteiro.
Guido Pella had an incredible 2019 season. Pella made a name for himself by becoming a solid opponent, not only on clay, but on all other surfaces. Pella is a quick player and he is able to take time away from their opponents. Pella impressed in Argentina last week and he will want to do even better here in Rio. Pella is great on clay, he is experienced and he knows what shots win rallies on the dirt. Pella will fancy his chances to make it far here in Rio, but will he be able to get past his first opponent?
Thiago Monteiro has begun to make a name for himself on the ATP Tour. Monteiro impressed in Australia with his strength and power on his shots. Monteiro, however, prefers clay courts. Monteiro has been great in the last couple of weeks in Argentina and has been able to beat some good opponents. Monteiro has a lot of confidence at the moment and if he is able to maintain his level of play, he will surely have some success in 2020.
This will be the first meeting between both players and you could make an argument for either of them to win. Monteiro is in better form at the moment, he is playing at home and he will be extra motivated to impress his friends and family. However, Pella had a great 2019 season and he has more experience. It will be a tight one, but in the end I think experience will prevail.
Guido Pella to win.
