Heather Watson and Serena Williams meet Friday in the third round of the 2015 Wimbledon.
Heather Watson is coming off a straight sets victory over Daniela Hantuchova, which took less than an hour and a half. Watson has gotten at least 61 percent of her first serves in play and has won at least 75 percent of those points. Watson has won at least 57 percent of her net points and has produced eight double faults. Watson has six aces, 31 winners and 30 unforced errors in her first two matches. Watson must do a better job with her first serve and must player a cleaner game if she’s going to have any chance of pulling off this upset. Still, Watson looks comfortable and has to be thrilled with making the third round of a grand slam for the first time since 2013. Watson has never made it to the fourth round of a grand slam in her young career.
Serena Williams is fresh off a straight sets win over Timea Babos, which finished in just under an hour. Serena is getting at least 53 percent of her first serves in play and has won at least 71 percent of those points. Serena has won at least 57 percent of her net points and has four double faults. Serena has combined for 15 aces, 42 winners and 28 unforced errors. Serena is looking far better in this tournament than she did in the French Open, as she’s hitting her spots and putting her opponent away early. Serena has lost just 10 games in her first two matches. Serena has been bounced in the third round of a grand slam just once since 2009, which was last year’s Wimbledon.
This will be the first time these two have faced each other on the court.
Watson is playing well and will be able to put this experience to use considering she’s still just 23 years old. But Serena is back to playing great tennis right now. Look for another quick match.
