Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

Ajla Tomljanović will be playing Hsieh Su-wei in the quarterfinals of the 2018 WTA Japan Open.

Ajla Tomljanović enters this match having won her second round match in straight sets. While it was an easy victory for Tomljanovic, she struggled with her serving all match as she conceded multiple double faults and had her serve broken 4 times. The serving is starting to become a point of concern for Ajla Tomljanović as she struggled with it in her opening round match also. In the opening round, Ajla Tomljanović conceded 6 double faults and had her service broken 3 times. This will be a much tougher match for Ajla Tomljanović than her first two since her opponent is much more skilled. With that in mind, Ajla Tomljanović will need to improve her serve if she wishes to compete with Hsieh Su-wei.

On the other side of the court, Hsieh Su-wei had a very good second round match where she failed to show any weaknesses. Hsieh Su-wei won the match in straight sets and served and received very well. This is best shown by the fact that Hsieh Su-wei won over 70% of the games played. Hsieh Su-wei has always done well in Asia as she which can be seen by the fact that she has 2 WTA titles in this continent. With such a strong Asian record, Hsieh Su-wei will be hard to beat.

This will be the first time these two players will play each other.

Taking everything into consideration, I am going to pick Hsieh Su-wei to win this match. Hsieh Su-wei is playing very well and has a great record of winning in Asia. Ajla Tomljanović, on the other hand, has a huge issue with her serving. These should add up to Hsieh Su-wei winning with some ease. I see Hsieh Su-wei making the semifinals.
