The Line: -- Over/Under:
Hubert Hurkacz and Roger Federer meet in the quarterfinal of the 2019 tennis Indian Wells.
Hubert Hurkacz is coming off a three sets win over Denis Shapovalov that took 30 games to decide. In the victory, Hurkacz won 70 percent of his first serve points and 45 percent of his second serve points. Hurkacz won 62 percent of his total service points and converted on three of his four break points. Hurkacz bounced back nicely in the third set after falling apart in the second set, and he’s now won four matches in a single tournament for the second time in his last six tries. Hurkacz has also won each of his last three matches in three sets, and he’s won five of his last seven matches overall that have gone the distance. This is easily some of the best tennis we’ve seen from the young Polish player. Hurkacz has two career wins over top-10 players, both wins coming this year over Kei Nishikori. Hurkacz has won six of his last seven matches on outdoor hard court.
Roger Federer is coming off a straight sets win over Kyle Edmund that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Federer won 79 percent of his first serve points and 50 percent of his second serve points. Federer won 69 percent of his total service points and saved all seven of his break points. Even with some questionable service games, Federer was in control of the match from start to finish and it took just over an hour to complete. Federer has now won 13 straight sets and should probably be the favorite to win the title with Novak Djokovic eliminated from the field. Federer hopes to make the semifinal of Indian Wells for the 12th time in his career and is 11-1 in quarterfinal matches in this tournament. Federer has won 11 of his last 12 matches on outdoor hard court.
There’s no match history between these two players.
Hurkacz has earned some respect in this tournament by beating some respectable players and finding a way to grind out these three set matches. However, there’s a massive step up in competition when facing Federer, somebody who isn’t only in good form but has a history of deep runs in this tournament. In fact, Federer has mentioned that Indian Wells is probably his favorite tournament outside of grand slams.
Federer reaches the semifinals of this tournament for the 12th time.
