Federer vs. Chung

The Line: -- Over/Under:
Hyeon Chung and Roger Federer meet in the semifinals of the 2018 Australian Open.
Hyeon Chung is coming off a straight sets win over Tennys Sandgren that took 32 games to decide. In the victory, Chung won 70 percent of his first serve points and 62 percent of his second serve points. Chung is coming off a match in which he won 36 percent of his return points and was broken just twice. Chung continues to be a defensive machine who keeps the ball in play, doesn’t make many silly errors and eventually frustrates his opponent into mistakes. Chung is well conditioned and composed for a 21-year-old, and if he can play with this consistency moving forward, he’s going to be a top-10 player in no time. Chung looks to make his first career grand slam final appearance and his second overall final appearance of his career. Chung has won three of his last four semifinal matches, two of which came in challenger play. Chung has won 10 of his last 12 matches on hard court.
Roger Federer is coming off a straight sets win over Tomas Berdych that took 32 games to decide. In the victory, Federer won 83 percent of his first serve points and 53 percent of his second serve points. Federer has yet to drop a set this tournament and is coming off a match in which he won 77 percent of his service points. There just hasn’t been much of a budge with Federer in this tournament, and even when he isn’t returning at a high level, he finds the slightest crack in his opponent and steals the set. Federer has won 19 of his last 21 sets overall. Federer hopes to make his fifth grand slam final appearance since 2015 and his seventh Australian Open final appearance in his career. Federer has split his last 10 grand slam semifinal appearances. Federer has won 10 of his last 11 matches on hard court.
This will be the first time these two meet on the tennis court.
I’m buying all of the Chung stock that I can right now, as the kid is the real deal and has shown he’s good and disciplined enough to hang with anybody you put in front of him. However, beating a player such as Federer is a different ball game, especially with him in this current form. There’s nothing you can put past Federer, as he knows how to counter everything and has dropped just nine matches on the main draw on outdoor hard court since the 2015 season. Also, the one weakness of Chung is his slow serve, something Federer is going to attack and put pressure on throughout the match.
Chung is the real deal and capable of winning matches like this right away, but betting against Federer as long as he’s healthy won’t work out much. I like Federer to reach another grand slam final.
