Iga Swiatek and Kristyna Pliskova meet in the semifinals of the 2019 tennis Samsung Open.

Iga Swiatek is coming off a three sets win over Vera Lapko that took 27 games to decide. In the victory, Swiatek won 67 percent of her first serve points and 50 percent of her second serve points. Swiatek won 60 percent of her total service points and converted on seven of her 19 break points. Swiatek has to be more cosnsitent with her serve, but she’s now won back-to-back three set matches and has produced a combined 10 breaks during that span. Swiatek has shown that clay is probably her favorite surface, and she’s put together quite the streak dating back to last year. Swiatek has a chance to make her first ever WTA singles final appearance. Swiatek has won each of her last 13 matches on clay court.

Kristyna Pliskova is coming off a three sets win over Svetlana Kuznetsova that took 31 games to decide. In the victory, Pliskova won 73 percent of her first serve points and 47 percent of her second serve points. Pliskova won 62 percent of her total service points and converted on five of her 14 break points. Pliskova has won six of her seven sets this tournament and has produced a combined 27 aces during those three matches. While her second serve needs work, Pliskova is a strong contender for this title if she continue to get so many free points with her first serve. Pliskova hopes to make her first final appearance since the 2017 Prague Open and the third final appearance of her career. Pliskova has won four of her last six matches on clay court.

There’s no match history between these two players.

You can make a strong case for Swiatek in this match given her ridiculous success on clay and the fact she’s been so aggressive with her return. I’m still giving the edge to Pliskova because of experience and her powerful serve that often gets her out of trouble. In a competitive match that’s sure to have a lot of swings, free points on the serve could be the world of difference.

I like Pliskova to make her third career final appearance.

Pick:
Kristyna Pliskova
