Ivana Jorovic and Elise Mertens meet in the second round of the 2019 tennis Morocco Open.

Ivana Jorovic is coming off a straight sets win over Magda Linette that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Jorovic won 77 percent of her first serve points and 62 percent of her second serve points. Jorovic won 73 percent of her total service points and converted on four of her nine break points. Jorovic got 75 percent of her first serves in play and even racked up six aces, two things that could truly make her a tough opponent moving forward. The problem is Jorovic has had trouble sustaining success on the main tour and has spent a lot of time either failing to qualify, or playing challenger and ITF matches. If Jorovic can repeat her first round effort, she’ll see much better results. Jorovic has won three of her last four matches on clay court.

Elise Mertens is coming off a straight sets win over Kirsten Flipkens that took 16 games to decide. In the victory, Mertens won 77 percent of her first serve points and 70 percent of her second serve points. Mertens won 74 percent of her total service points and converted on five of her 11 break points. Mertens dominated her match that took just over an hour, a match in which she won six of the final eight points of the second set. It was easily one of the best performances we’ve seen from Mertens recently, especially with her entering this tournament losing five of her last seven matches. Mertens hopes to win back-to-back matches for the first time since Doha. Mertens has lost two of her last three matches on clay court.

There’s no match history between these two players.

Jorovic has struggled to string together success on the main tour and is now going up against a top-20 player who looks impressive in her Tuesday victory. Mertens entered this tournament with issues of her own, but if she’s going to play the way she just did, she’s a player who is capable of pushing for a title in this event. Jorovic is a little too inexperienced and inconsistent to win this match, as her serve can disappear at the wrong time.

Mertens cruises in this contest.
