Jan-Lennard Struff and Grigor Dimitrov meet in the second round of the 2019 tennis Monte Carlo.

Jan-Lennard Struff is coming off a three sets win over Denis Shapovalov that took 28 games to decide. In the victory, Struff won 72 percent of his first serve points and 48 percent of his second serve points. Struff won 60 percent of his total service points and converted on six of his 16 break points. Struff showed great fight in the victory after losing a near one hour first set to dropping a combined four games in the final two sets. If Struff improves his second serve, he has a shot to be a really tough out moving forward. Struff hopes to make the third round of Monte Carlo for the third straight year. Struff has won five of his last six matches on clay court.

Grigor Dimitrov is coming off a straight sets win over Matteo Berrettini that took 22 games to decide. In the victory, Dimitrov won 73 percent of his first serve points and 50 percent of his second serve points. Dimitrov won 61 percent of his total service points and converted on four of his 18 break points. Dimitrov needs to get better than 50 percent of his first serves in play and clean up the six double faults, but his return was on point and he had some impressive shotmaking. Dimitrov hopes to win at least two matches for the third time in his last four tournaments. Dimitrov also hopes to make the third round of Monte Carlo for the fifth time in his career. Dimitrov has split his last eight matches on clay court.

These two have split the previous two matches, as Struff won 2017 Monte Carlo in three sets, while Dimitrov won Stockholm 2013 in straight sets.

Struff has the rest advantage and is coming off a highly impressive performance, but I have more confidence in Dimitrov to win this match. While some shaky results at times, we’re seeing Dimitrov start to put things together and regain his confidence. He’s hitting the ball with a little more pace lately and has been able to come up big when needed. Dimitrov is very dangerous once he gets a win or two under his belt, as he stops questioning his shot selection so much.

Look for Dimitrov to advance to the third round.

Pick:
Grigor Dimitrov
