Tennis | Johanna Konta vs Jeļena Ostapenko
Jean-Yves Ahern-USA TODAY Sports

The Rogers Cup draw has produced the prospect of a very exciting opening round tennis match in the women’s event as Latvian superstar, Jeļena Ostapenko, takes on the inform Johanna Konta from the United Kingdom. Both players will feel that they can win this tournament so we should expect a great contest.

Jeļena Ostapenko last played at Wimbledon where she impressed everyone by making it to the semifinal stage. At the age of only 21, Jeļena Ostapenko has already established herself as one of the top players in the world and she is expected to do very good things in the future. The US Open is the next major tournament coming up and having already won a grand slam, Jeļena Ostapenko will be desperate to win another very soon. The 2017 French Open champion will know that she needs to do well at the US Open which is not far away and by having a deep run in this tournament, she will be well prepared from Flushing Meadows.

While Jeļena Ostapenko will be fresh after resting since Wimbledon, Johanna Konta will be hoping that the added tennis she has played recently will come in her aid. The British player recently played in the Stanford Classic where she had a deep run and eliminated Serena Williams. That win over Serena Williams seems to have given Johanna Konta tons of confidence which she has shown in her matches since the victory. It will be interesting to see if the benefits of the added confidence can be seen in this clash.

While Johanna Konta has been playing really well, I am going to go against her and pick Jeļena Ostapenko to win. The Latvian is one of the elite female players in 2018 and I don’t see her losing in the opening round. Expect this to be a short game since I think Jeļena Ostapenko will be dominant and win in straight sets to send Johanna Konta packing after one match.

Pick:
Jeļena Ostapenko
