The Line: -- Over/Under:
Jelena Ostapenko and Mihaela Buzarnescu meet in the third round of the 2018 tennis Eastbourne International.
Jelena Ostapenko is coming off a straight sets win over Kaia Kanepi that took 21 games to decide. In the victory, Ostapenko won 71 percent of her first serve points and 41 percent of her second serve points. Ostapenko won 61 percent of her total service points and broke four times. She can certainly improve her overall serve and make far less unforced errors, but it was a nice victory to kind of right the ship after some recent struggles. Ostapenko needs as much confidences she can get heading into the Wimbledon, which she made the quarterfinals of last year. Ostapenko has won six of her last eight matches on grass court.
Mihaela Buzarnescu is coming off a three sets win over Kiki Bertens that took 31 games to decide. In the victory, Buzarnescu won 59 percent of her first serve points and 53 percent of her second serve points. Buzarnescu won just 57 percent of her total service points, but she gave herself 21 break chances and converted on six of those tries. Buzarnescu has quietly had a pretty decent season this year and is probably playing her best tennis of the year on grass court. Buzarnescu hopes to make her sixth quarterfinal appearance of the season. Buzarnescu has three career wins over top-10 players, all coming this year. Buzarnescu has won seven of her last nine matches on grass court.
These two have played once, which was in this years Qatar Total Open, a match Buzarnescu won. The match took 16 games to be decided.
Buzarnescu is worthy of a look here given just how effective she’s been on grass up to this point. However, I have a hard time betting against Ostapenko when she’s motivated, and she needs these matches to kind of build confidence after the way things ended in the French Open. I expect Ostapenko to bring that fiery spirit and find a way to victory.
Possible three setter, but Ostapenko wins.
