Nicolas Jarry and Federico Delbonis meet in the semifinals of the 2019 tennis Swedish Open.
Nicolas Jarry is coming off a straight sets win over Jeremy Chardy that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Jarry won 72 percent of his first serve points and 59 percent of his second serve points. Jarry won 68 percent of his total service points and converted on four of his four break points. Jarry got 70 percent of his first serves in play and saved six of his seven break points. Jarry has won all six sets this tournament and doesn’t look like the same player who entered this event losing five of his last seven matches. Jarry hopes to make his second final of the year and the third final appearance of his career. Jarry has won six of his last eight matches on clay court.
Federico Delbonis is coming off a straight sets win over Joao Sousa that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Delbonis won 76 percent of his first serve points and 47 percent of his second serve points. Delbonis won 66 percent of his total service points and converted on five of his seven break points. Delbonis got 66 percent of his first serves in play and saved four of his six break points. Delbonis has now won eight straight matches when you include his challenger title in Italy, and he’s won three straight matches on the main tour for the third time since the Australian Open. Delbonis hopes to make his first final appearance since the 2016 Grand Prix Hassan II and the fifth final appearance of his career. Delbonis has won nine of his last 10 matches on clay court.
Delbonis won the only meeting in a 2017 challenger match, a match that was won in straight sets and 22 games.
Jarry is probably playing the cleaner tennis of the two and is coming off an impressive win over Chardy, but it’s Delbonis who has been on a roll these last few weeks and has really turned his season around on clay. This match also probably means a little more to Delbonis, who hasn’t made a final appearance in three years.
I expect a motivated Delbonis and for him to squeeze out a victory.
