Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Andy Murray will play in the fourth round of the 2014 US Open.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga continues to cruise in this tournament, winning his last two matches in straight sets. Tsonga’s most recent victory over Pablo Carreno Busta needed just 30 games to be decided. In the win, Tsonga continued to show his power by pounding out 14 aces, winning 81 percent of his first serve points and averaging a first serve speed of 121 mph. Tsonga struggled heading into this tournament after suffering an early exit in the Cincinnati Masters, but he’s clearly found his form here and is playing like the player who was once ranked in the top five. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is moving well, has his power back and is making far less errors. This will be the true test to see if Tsonga is really back, especially after he’s been eliminated in the fourth round of the previous three majors this season.
Andy Murray keeps finding ways to win despite letting his opponents hang around. Murray’s most recent win came against Alex Kuznetsov in four sets, and like his match against Robin Haase, he blew the third set to make it much longer than it should have been. In the win, Murray hit 47 winners, won 70 percent of his first serve points and 88 percent of his net points. At times, Andy Murray does show signs that he’s not 100 percent healthy and you have to wonder if the drawn out matches are going to impact his play as we get deeper in the tournament. Regardless, Murray is where he is and he hasn’t been eliminated in the fourth round or earlier of a major since the 2010 US Open.
These two have played 12 times, and Andy Murray leads the series, 9-3. However, their most recent meeting in this year’s Canadian Masters was a victory for Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in a three-set match. Murray has won eight of the last nine times these two have played.
I think this is truly a toss-up game, so I have to go with the guy who is playing the better tennis right now. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is moving better and hitting the ball harder than Andy Murray. I think he pulls off the upset here and advances to the quarters.
