Sock vs. Tsonga
|Date & Time||Sunday September 4, 2016, 9:00 PM (EDT)|
The Line: -- Over/Under:
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Jack Sock meet in the fourth round of the 2016 US Open.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is coming off a straight sets win over Kevin Anderson that took 32 games to decide. In the victory, Tsonga won 80 percent of his first serve points and 59 percent of his second serve points. Tsonga has dropped just one set this tournament and is gaining big time confidence with each point, as he even gives the crowd a celebration dance after the match. Tsonga will be tough to beat as long as he continues to serve as well as he has up to this point. Tsonga hopes to make his fourth grand slam quarterfinal since 2015. Tsonga has won 10 of his last 15 matches on hard court.
Jack Sock is coming off a straight sets win over Marin Cilic that took 28 games to decide. In the victory, Sock won 86 percent of his first serve points and 71 percent of his second serve points. Sock has won his last seven sets and has dropped just 14 games in his last two matches. Sock is somebody who is clearly taking advantage of the American crowd and rising his game to another level. It’ll be interesting to see if Sock can continue to serve at such a high percentage, something that give him a chance at another big victory. Sock hopes to make his first grand slam quarterfinal appearance. Sock has won five of his last seven matches on hard court.
These two have met once in the past, which was in the 2015 Madrid Masters, a match Tsonga won in three sets. The match took 29 games to decide.
Sock has the potential to win this match if he continues to serve at such a high level. However, Tsonga continues to be the more consistent player and is more polished right now. The crowd makes me want to side with Sock, as crazy things happen in this tournament. However, Tsonga is the safer pick and probably wins this match. He’s too consistent.
