Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Marin Cilic meet in the quarterfinals of the 2015 US Open.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is coming off a straight sets win over Benoit Paire and has played 12 sets this tournament. Tsonga is winning at least 81 percent of his first serve points and 58 percent of his second serve points. Tsonga has produced 29 aces, 118 winners and 58 unforced errors in his last three matches. Tsonga is playing some of the cleaner tennis we’ve seen from him in quite some time, and he should be extremely fresh given he’s won all his matches in straight sets with zero tiebreaks. Tsonga has always been a force with his power game, and he’s nearly impossible to beat when he’s making so few unforced errors like he is this tournament. Tsonga looks for his second grand slam semifinal appearance this season. Tsonga has never reached the semifinal of the US Open in his career.

Marin Cilic is coming off a four set win over Jeremy Chardy and has played 15 sets this tournament. Cilic is winning at least 76 percent of his first serve points and 49 percent of his second serve points. Cilic has produced 69 aces, 146 winners and 105 unforced errors in his last two matches. Cilic has been able to dig deep this tournament and find ways to win despite being pushed in each of his last two matches. However, in order to win this match, Cilic has to be stronger on his second serve, as he’s won no better than 57 percent in his last three matches. Cilic looks for his third grand slam semifinal appearance of his career. A win here makes back-to-back US Open semifinal appearances for Cilic.

These two have played seven times in the past, and Cilic has won four of those meetings. The most recent match was in last year’s Monte-Carlo Masters, a match Cilic won in straight sets. Cilic has beaten Tsonga the last three matches, as Tsonga’s last win over Cilic came in the 2011 Cincinnati Masters. This will be the sixth time these two meet on hard court.

This is a tough match, as these two guys have history and have great power games that are tough to beat when they’re on. And while Cilic has owned Tsonga lately, Tsonga is the one who is actually playing better tennis. Cilic has been brutal with his second serve, something Tsonga won’t allow him to get away with.

I like Tsonga to win this match give what he’s shown us this tournament.

Pick:
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
