Jo-Wilfried Tsonga vs. Tomas Berdych 2015 French Open, Pick, Odds, Prediction

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Tomas Berdych play Sunday in the fourth round of the 2015 French Open.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has yet to lose a set in this tournament and is coming off a victory against Pablo Andujar. Tsonga has played no more than 32 games in a single match and looks to be regaining solid form that he’s been missing for a while. Tsonga has hit a combined 72 winners in his last two matches and has won no worse than 74 percent of his first serve points. Tsonga is moving well and seems to be slowly gaining confidence that he’s missed for the last year or slow. The one concern for Tsonga is that he is coming off a match in which he had four double faults and 39 unforced errors. Tsonga has not made it out of the fourth round of a major since the 2013 French Open.

Tomas Berdych is coming off back-to-back four set victories, including his most recent match against Benoit Paire. Berdych has played a combined 79 games in his last two matches and has 14 aces during that time. Berdych has hit 80 winners in his last two matches and has only had to play two tiebreaks. Berdych is at his best when he has max power behind his serve and is putting away points quickly. Berdych has shown glimpses of that in this tournament and hasn’t made a ton of errors overall. However, like his opponent, Berdych is also coming off a somewhat sloppy game in which he had six double faults and just one ace. Berdych has surpassed the fourth round of the French Open just twice in his career.

These two have faced each other nine times, and Berdych has won seven of those meetings. Berdych has won the last two meetings, including a 2015 matchup at the Madrid Masters. Tsonga won his matchups in the 2011 ATP World Tour Finals and in Marseille in 2013. This will be the first time these two have faced each other in a major.

This is an interesting matchup because Tsonga is playing better than we’ve seen in a while, and Berdych isn’t at his best when playing on clay. However, I’m not sure we can start drinking the Tsonga Kool Aid just yet. I have more confidence in Berdych finding a way to win this match.
