Joao Sousa will take on Daniil Medvedev in the opening round of the 2018 ATP St Petersburg Open in Russia.

This will be a big tournament for Daniil Medvedev as he is playing in his home country of Russia. Medvedev enters this tournament in good form as he won the Winston-Salem Open a few weeks ago and followed that victory by making the third round of the US Open. Daniil Medvedev was eliminated in the first round of this tournament last season and while that is not great, it should only motivate the Russian to do better this year since he gets great support from the crowd in all his matches. With the crowd behind him and the confidence of a recent WTA title win, Daniil Medvedev will be very hard to beat in this tournament.

On the other side of the court, Joao Sousa has struggled in recent times. Outside of the US Open, Sousa has not won a single match and that kind of form is very harmful to the player's confidence. Joao Sousa made the second round of this tournament last season but it will be very hard for him to make it that far this time around since he has a very tough first round draw. Joao Sousa will need to silence the crowd and play at his best if he wishes to compete in this match.

These two players have played once in the past with Joao Sousa winning on that occasion. That match was played at Joao Sousa’s home country of Portugal and on a clay court. While the knowledge of victory will give Joao Sousa confidence, the scenario of this match is completely different as Medvedev will be at home and the match will be played on a hard court.

All in all, I am going to pick Daniil Medvedev to win this match. Medvedev is in great form having recently won a tournament and with the home court advantage, he should be more than good enough to win this match.
